About the Work
LANDSCAPE, STILL LIFE & SPONTANEOUS VISTAS
What I paint is often something that has caught me fleetingly, or out of the corner of my eye; the fall of light, shadows, shapes, contrasts, an atmosphere. I respond to places, scenes and things that have an air of earthy peace.
I am inspired by the everyday and commonplace, light and texture; an old bread crock on a stone hearth, a strand of ivy hanging over the edge of a weathered white-washed wall, a Bedouin knife propped on a shelf, a plate hanging on a heavy chimney breast. I also have an affinity for the countryside, coast and nature and the peace, stillness and solitude to be found there. In my paintings I respond not only to what I see but to the sounds, scents and feel of nature too - damp earth, wind in the trees, the rich scents of woodland, the ground underfoot.
I have always preferred water-based paints finding them more successful to control and achieve an earthy feel and a combination of spontaneity and strength. Each piece is started by making drawings, getting a feel for the subject and the setting, tones, planning and refining composition before moving on to paint the finished picture.

ENTHEOS* & EINFUHLUNG*
Creating these pieces of work is a rather meditative, contemplative act and contemplation is something I would hope to evoke in those viewing the work. We all benefit from aesthetic pleasure and the inspiriation it provides and it is known that beauty and symmetry are intrinsic to nature and natural selection and are beneficial to our well-being on many levels.
Though this pen and ink work is endogenous and intuitive there are definite themes and sources I refer to, use and reflect in my work. Numbers, patterns and geometry all excite me while nature has it’s place here as it does in my paintings.
*Entheos (Greek) - a feeling of possession by or the presence of the divine.
*Einfuhlung (German) - ‘feeling into’ or empathy.
